A dental implant is a permanent replacement for a missing tooth. It can be made from a variety of materials. The most common are titanium and ceramic. An implant is usually placed in the jawbone using a surgical procedure. After the implant is placed in the jawbone, it is covered with a soft, pink tissue called gingiva. The gingiva is attached to the implant by a small piece of bone called a fixture. Once the gingiva is attached to the implant, it is very difficult to remove it. If the implant becomes loose or falls out, it can be replaced easily.
