After Your Surgery

Post Operative Instructions for Braces

#BRACES:

  1. You’ve just got your braces on. This may cause you to feel some general soreness in your mouth and your teeth may be tender while chewing for the first few days.
  2. Drinking cold water may help reduce the forces and relieve some of your discomfort since the special archwires are activated by heat.
  3. Brush your teeth and gums thoroughly after each meal. Brush your teeth in all directions.
  4. Use a fluoridated toothpaste. Use tooth mousse twice a week around the braces.
  5. Use a water pik / water flosser at least once a day after brushing.
  6. Rinse mouth with warm salt water or just gargle with plain water after meals.
  7. Do not eat anything sticky, gummy, chewy or hard as it may loosen your braces. Examples:
  8. No gum, caramels, taffy or doughnuts
  9. No popcorn, nuts, dry fruits or ice cubes.
  10. Cut raw fruits and vegetables into sections before consumption
  11. Soft roti can be taken, avoid hard ones.
  12. Plain ice creams can be taken without nuts
  13. Only pain killer which should be taken to reduce the pain or discomfort is Paracetamol. No other pain killer should be taken as it might stop tooth movement. Contact your Clinical Coordinator before taking any medication.
  14. The lips, cheeks and tongue may also become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become accustomed to the surface of the braces.
  15. Place wax directly on the braces or poking areas to lessen this irritation till you visit your orthodontist
  16. If you develop ulcers, a soothing oral gel prescribed by your dentist can reduce the pain and burning sensation.
  17. Call immediately if a wire breaks or if a band or bracket becomes loose. We need to schedule a special appointment to repair the same.
  18. Missing out on scheduled follow-up appointments will prolong the treatment duration.
  19. Cooperation in wearing elastics and all removable appliances is most important to treatment success.
  20. See your orthodontist for regular dental check-ups.
  21. We expect your treatment period to be as uneventful as possible. If a question or concern arises regarding treatment or medication, please contact your Clinical Coordinator

Post Operative Instructions for Composite Restorations

#COMPOSITE RESTORATIONS:

  1. Sensitivity of treated tooth is usually most noticeable in the first 12-24 hours.
  2. Sensitivity, especially to cold temperatures is common for a few days following a composite filling. Usually deeper the cavity, the more sensitive the tooth maybe.
  3. The gum tissue could have been irritated during the procedure and may be sore for a few days. If anaesthesia was administered, the injection site would also be sore for the same duration.
  4.  The filling is fully set and you are set to eat as you usually would when you leave the office. If anaesthesia was administered please be careful while eating until it wears off so you don’t bite your lips, cheeks, or tongue.
  5. In Children, when fillings are done under anaesthesia, they should be closely observed until it wears off. Due to the strange numb feeling, many children tend to chew the inside of their lips, cheeks, or tongue which can cause serious damage.
  6. The finished restoration may be contoured slightly and have a different texture than the original tooth. Your tongue usually magnifies this small difference, but you will become accustomed to this in a few days.
  7. If after a week or two, you feel your teeth do not touch correctly please call you Clinical Coordinator. This problem can be solved with a quick adjustment to the filling.
  8. Proper brushing and flossing is recommended to help your fillings last for a longer time. Having your teeth cleaned every six months and an examination with x-rays will help prolong the life of your fillings.
  9. In case of any concerns or queries, please contact your Clinical Coordinator.

Postoperative Instructions for Crowns and Bridges

#CROWNS AND BRIDGES

  1. If anaesthesia was administered, do not eat or chew on the side of the mouth that was worked on, for at least 2 hours or until the numbness wears off.
  2. Do not smoke until the anaesthesia has worn off to prevent injury from accidentally biting or burning your oral structures.
  3. It is normal to have soreness on the treated tooth, the surrounding gum, the injection sites or the jaw joint for the first 24-48 hours post-treatment. A warm salt water rinse can help soothe your tender gums instantly.
  4. Sensitivity, especially to cold, is common post-treatment. For the first few days, avoid extremely hot or cold food and beverages.

TEMPORARY CROWNS

  1. The temporary crown/bridge has been placed until the fabrication and placement of your permanent crowns.
  2. It is cemented with a temporary material that is designed to come off easily. Hence, avoid chewing hard, sticky foods such as gum, taffy, sticky candy, etc.
  3. Use your toothbrush to clean the temporary crown as you normally do with your natural teeth. However, when flossing, it is best to pull the floss through the contact rather than lift up and down, to prevent loosening and accidental dislodging of the temporary crowns.
  4. If your temporary crown comes off between appointments, please call your Clinical Coordinator.

PERMANENT CROWN OR BRIDGE CEMENTATION

  1. After the cementation of your permanent crowns, it may take a few days for you to get used to the new material in your mouth.
  2.  If your bite feels unbalanced or high, please call your Clinical Coordinator for an appointment to have it adjusted.
  3. Do not chew on ice cubes or hard foods. It is deleterious to bite on hard objects like sticks, pens etc.
  4. You may use an anti-sensitivity toothpaste with fluoride if thermal sensitivity occurs.
  5. Regular brushing and flossing is necessary to maintain your crowns and the tooth underneath in pristine condition.
  6. Follow the methods and home care aids advised by your dental specialist to clean the bridge area.
  7. Routine home care and regulating your intake of sugar-containing foods will increase the longevity of your new restorations.
